Date Summons

Date Summons is 2D game that combines aspects of dating simulators with hearty inspiration from titles like “Megaman Battle Network”. In the game, the player chooses one of three monster girls to summon on a date, during which they will have to fight. Made in three days for Ludum Dare 55: Summoning.

I created the designs for the girls, made all of the in-game sprites and did programming for the combat system. I worked together with 2 others.

For this jam we had a considerably large scope and it was a challenge to get in all the features we wanted. In the end we managed to Complete most of the planned work and even had time for some polish.

Features

Support for Different tile layouts.

Battle System

The battle system sees two sides of the field, on side for the player and the other for the date enemy. The player can freely move over their own tiles and attack or charge their shot. The system also has support for different amounts of tiles, which wasn’t used in the final game.

Each enemy has a unique set of attacks with different patterns, keeping the player on their toes and forcing them to adapt. The third and last date is meant as the final test of the player’s skill.

Battle & Portrait Sprites

Each character has their own set of combat and battle sprites. The game’s artstyle aims for a low-res retro look with pastel colors.

After concepting the characters, I translated the high-res art into portrait sprites akin to those you would see on the NeoGeo Pocket or Gameboy. The battle sprites were designed to be economic in how much time they would take to make and still look good.
